Practice interview event at HMP Styal

Working Chance – the UK’s only specialist recruitment consultancy for women with criminal convictions and female care leavers – held a successful practice interview event at HMP Styal last month, in partnership with Auto Trader. Representatives from Auto Trader (one of the biggest car buying and selling businesses) helped the women to rehearse their interview technique and become more comfortable with disclosing their conviction, resulting in some great feedback. One woman commented: “I enjoyed today and it has definitely helped me – I feel more confident.” Another said: “I was myself and I shared my goals and my vision… Everyone was great to talk to.”

Working Chance is also busy running one of its Working Lunches courses at the moment – a six-week series of workshops covering everything women with convictions need to know about finding a job. Topics include writing an outstanding CV, disclosing a conviction at interview, confidence-building exercises and more. Our candidates often find these sessions are a fantastic way to share their experiences with other women who have been through the criminal justice system – developing their confidence in a supportive environment and building up a network of relationships which last well beyond the end of the course. Feedback from the workshops so far has been excellent – one woman commented, “I really enjoyed today’s group. I love coming and being part of the team – praising people and being praised.” Another said: “I wouldn’t change anything about this workshop – I’m glad I came.”
